Frank Gehry is big on using "junk" materials (i.e. sheet metal, wood, glass, stucco, and chain link) in his buildings. This started in the 1960's-1970's when architects all made box buildings. Ghery used these materials and made buildings that were outside the "norm". They say on man's trash is another man's treasure. Gehry puts this saying to a whole new level.
A good example is his house. Nothing more than a two story bungalow, Gehry added sheet metal, chain link, and a lot of glass. On the inside it has been stripped down to the wood frame. There is a ton of glass meaning a ton of natural light. He uses cubes of glass to illuminate his house.
Another good example is the Serpentine Gallery. This shows his love of wood, steel, and glass. It is used as an amphitheater. It is based after Da Vinci's catapult, with perfect balance between wood and steel bars. Alternate view here. Although it may look like a pile of steel and wood, but it can protect against wind and rain and it has very good acoustics.
