What architects use for their building is very important and can effect the mood, lighting, and people's attraction to it. From "junk" materials to eco-friendly to concrete, these 16 architects are different, but some use the same materials.
Antione Predock is a natural materials person. Not like eco-friendly natural materials, but materials that have been used for thousands of years. Stucco and adobe are used in his designs to trap heat and for acustical barriers. Renzo Piano also uses natural materials, but more like eco-friendly ones. Shigeru Ban is also a good example for natural materials because he uses a lot of paper and paper tubes in his designs. His designs that aren't used with paper, however, are usually made with no walls. Ma Yonsong is another person who uses indigenous materials, like Antione Predock. Yet Yonsong uses materials from China, not America, and he uses especially bamboo. There isn't much said about JDS, other than he tends to use recycled materials.
Frank Gehry uses "junk". More specifically sheet metal, wood, glass, chainlink, and stucco. He liked to build things that were outside the "norm". Another person who really liked wood was Peter Zumthor. If he used wood, the whole building would be wood. He also liked stone, and if he used stone, the whole building would be stone. Steven Holl also uses stone, but an interesting thing about him is that he paints his walls white to reflect light.
Some architects liked glass and sharp modernity. Zaha Hadid uses glass because it allows for people to see her art, but she also uses concrete and some metal. Thom Mayne also uses glass, wood, and steel. Diller, Scofidio + Renfro also uses glass, but sometimes fogs it for a different mood. UN Studio uses a lot of glass, but they just mainly build according to customer. NOX is another main glass user. Will Alsop and Norman Foster don't have much said about them, but they like very modern and contemperary themes. Calatrava tends to use a lot of metal.
In conclusion, architects use a wide range of materials, it just depends on what they're tastes are.
